Most people know the Amazon Best Seller’s page but many do not understand its importance. The list, which is updated hourly, gives you the most popular product categories and subcategories with a list of the top sellers in each of them. By studying the lists and researching the current number of sources, you can add a great product to your mix. The only two limitations of the page is you don’t see the sales numbers themselves, and the list is limited to the top 100 items. In categories where there are thousand of items, number 102 might be an excellent choice.
You can, however, see how many companies are selling the product and how many reviews have been entered. On the item's product page, you will see the Buy Box winner, but you can find other sources and their prices by scanning down. Look at Best Sellers Rank (BSR)
The Amazon Best Sellers lists only provide you with the top 100 products in each category. However, many have millions of products. If everyone concentrates on the first 100, that creates lots of competition for the same items. Smart researchers then turn to BSR or Best Sellers Rank. On each product detail page, you find the BSR by scanning down to the Product information. The BSR tells you exactly where the item lies on the relevant category list or sometimes category lists. It might be the 105th item, meaning it doesn’t show on the Best Seller’s Page but is still considered a high demand product on Amazon. You may not know how many of something sells each year or the volume, but the information is still extremely valuable.
Knowing what rank a product has is great, but it’s also important to know the total number of products in the grouping. Some categories, like "Home & Kitchen," have millions of products, so even a rank of 8,000 is a great possibility. Other categories like professional medical supplies have fewer products, so the number 8000 might not be a great choice. Therefore, it is best to consider selling things in the top 1-10% of any category. To see the total number of items available, select the department from the drop-down menu on the left side of the search bar. Type the right and left square bracket into the search bar and see the total number of products.

- You can usually gauge sales numbers based on BSR. According to many Amazon sellers, including Web Retailer, products with a BSR between 8,000 and 10,000 may generate 4-6 sales per day. With a BSR below 2000, the sales climb to between 6 and 10 units a day. Using these formulas, sellers can estimate potential sales volume.

It only has a couple of suppliers but is a best seller. It’s #55 in pet supplies and #1 in dog bowls. It has over 77,000 reviews.
Beauty and personal care items are always great, and currently tea tree oil products are in demand. This shampoo is designed specifically for course dry hair and features popular lavender mint scent. There are four suppliers besides Amazon and the BSR is #106 for Beauty and Personal Care and #3 for Hair Shampoo. The star rating is very high and there are 38,060 reviews which means lots of sales. The item is small and lightweight with little chance for breakage during transit.
Check Product Profitability
Besides having high demand, low competition products on Amazon, a big part of business success is profitability. On Amazon selling lots of something at a low-profit margin often isn't as good as selling fewer items with higher margins. The risk of losing money due to returns, changing and unforeseen market trends is higher with a low per-item profit margin. New sellers should start with relatively inexpensive items, under $15, with profit margins of 50%. That’s the same as 100% markup. For example, if something costs you $5, sell it for $10.
